ChatGPT's advertising business reached a billion dollars in under two hundred days

About one in four ChatGPT answers now contains an ad. The organic answer is getting narrower.

On 31 August 2026 OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers across more than forty countries, and a self-service Ads Manager that small businesses can use directly. Two weeks earlier the product had expanded into 31 European markets.

For context: ChatGPT reports over a billion weekly active users.

This is the fastest-growing advertising product anyone has launched in a long time, and it is being built into the surface where your customers are now asking who to hire.

What OpenAI says about the separation:

“Ads in ChatGPT are always clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT’s answers. Advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.”

Ads are described as visually separated, labelled sponsored, ineligible near health, mental health and political topics, and shown only on the Free and Go tiers.

And the independent measurement, which is the number to hold onto. Similarweb’s tracking found that roughly 26% of ChatGPT responses now contain an ad.

Both of those can be true at once, and the distinction is the whole point. The answer may be uninfluenced. The screen is now about a quarter monetised. What is being sold is not the recommendation — it is the space around it, and the attention that was going to the recommendation.

Why this matters more than it looks.

The argument for doing anything about AI visibility has always had an unspoken assumption behind it: that the organic answer is the whole surface, and being named in it is being seen. That assumption had about two good years.

We have watched this film before. Google’s results page began as ten blue links. It is now a page where the first screen is frequently advertising, and where organic listings have been pushed progressively downward for fifteen years. The direction of travel for an answer engine with a billion weekly users and a billion-dollar ad business is not difficult to guess.

The practical reading, and we would rather be plain than dramatic about it:

Being named organically is worth more now than it will be later. Not because it will stop working, but because the surface it appears on will get more crowded. Every month the organic answer is the whole screen is a month of a cheaper channel.

Paid is now an option for a small business, and it wasn’t in January. The self-service Ads Manager exists. If you are already spending on Google Ads, this is a channel your competitors will find in the next two quarters, and the auction is not yet crowded.

And a caution. We do not run ads, we have no data on ChatGPT ad performance, and we would not pretend to. What we can tell you is where you currently stand in the organic answer, which is the thing you would be bidding against.

One more measurement worth putting beside all this, because it cuts the other way and you should have it. Similarweb also found that the share of US ChatGPT prompts whose answers contain any citation rose from about 1.6% in June 2025 to 6.8% in May 2026. Both numbers are small. The large majority of ChatGPT answers still cite nothing at all — which means the addressable surface for citation-based visibility is growing fast and is still, in absolute terms, narrow.

That is an honest picture: a channel growing quickly, from a small base, on a screen that is getting more commercial. Worth working on. Not worth betting the business on.
